Pencil Sharpener Drawing
I've been working through some of the exercises from the Keys to Drawing
on my ipad. This exercise is Project 1F – Mechanical Objects. He suggests drawing a sewing machine, egg beater or an old rotary pencil sharpener. I drew a vintage Boston 55 pencil sharpener, which is solid metal and will last a lifetime. The X-Acto Ranger 55, which is the current version, is solid black instead of chrome and beige.
The reflections were the fun part of this drawing and I like the sketchiness of the line work, especially around the crank.

A new vector app is being developed - Stagestack
Stagestack is the new vector app that Quasado has been developing for the past two years. It's supposed to have the feel of Freehand without being an exact clone of it. You can support the development of it by making a donation, which will qualify you for a discount on the final product. They have posted some videos of the features that they have already completed. The cost of the program will be approximately 400 Euros or $490 USD.
Here's a youtube video of expressive running on Mac OS X 10.6. It's still in the early stages of development, but it already has some impressive features. At roughly 1:12 minutes he splits open a circle to make a pac-man like shape with very little effort–I've never seen this in a vector app before. Rounding one corner of a rectangle looks simple too.
Since FreeFreehand.org has settled with Adobe the site has changed to FreehandForum.org which will help support the development of a Freehand alternative. It will also function as a forum for vector app professionals.

Still Life- Onion, Pear, Bottle
A fun still life drawn with Adobe Ideas, from direct observation without the use of photographs. There are subtle color variations that probably wouldn't show up in a photograph, but can easily be captured from direct observation. I especially enjoyed matching the colors for the pear and the onion.

I completed this right before the Western New York Railway Historical Society started restoring it. Just this morning it received a coat of glossy fire engine red paint. Now I'm tempted to paint a red version...
