This is a view of Main Street Williamsville from the library parking lot. The yellow building is the Bee Group Newspaper office. What makes this painting work is the contrast between the sunlit areas and the darker shadows in the foreground. The illusion of wet pavement was also fun to recreate.
Snow can be difficult to paint. The trick is that it is rarely pure white. Notice that the shadows on the snow covered roof are a muted blue purple and the highlighted areas are a warm gray. I rarely use black to mix colors even when I need a gray. Mixing grays from pure white and black can appear flat and lifeless.
