Knox farms, located in East Aurora, N.Y., is a nice place to walk during the summer. The trees on this road create a shady tunnel to walk under which provides some much needed relief from the sun. I took many of pictures of this area, but I wasn’t entirely satisfied with them. I felt that they were missing something but then I spotted a couple taking a walk at the end of the road and I knew that this would make the painting.
The foliage was difficult to paint at first, I think I was being too fussy with the details. I realized that I needed to paint the overall light and dark patterns of the foliage and that the brushstrokes need to be more deliberate. The dappled sunlight was a fun pattern to paint and it provides some interest to the foreground.
Nature scenes often benefit from the addition of figures, aside from adding a human element they also provide a sense of scale. Without them we wouldn’t have a sense of how tall the trees are in this painting.
